Understanding Diabetes
Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases that affect how your body uses sugar. One of the main symptoms of diabetes is having sugar in your urine. Back in the day, people would test their urine to see if it tasted sweeter than usual.
There are different types of diabetes, but they all have one thing in common - problems with insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate your blood sugar levels. If your body doesn't make enough insulin or can't use it properly, you might have diabetes. World Diabetes Day is celebrated on November 14th to raise awareness about this disease.
Common Symptoms of Diabetes
There are two main types of diabetes - Type 1 and Type 2.
Type 1
diabetes can cause rapid weight loss, constant thirst, and frequent urination. You might also experience fatigue, blurry vision, and headaches.
Type 2
diabetes is often linked to high blood sugar levels, increased thirst, and frequent urination. Some people with Type 2 diabetes don't show any symptoms for a long time.
Diabetes Treatments
If you have Type 1 diabetes, your body doesn't make insulin. You'll need to take insulin injections or use an insulin pump to manage your blood sugar levels. Unfortunately, there's no cure for Type 1 diabetes, so you'll need to keep up with your treatment for life. For Type 2 diabetes, making lifestyle changes like exercising and losing weight can help control your blood sugar levels. It's important to catch diabetes early and start treatment as soon as possible.
